First Trimester (Weeks 1–13)

This is when your baby’s vital organs and systems begin to form, and you may start noticing early pregnancy symptoms.

Weeks 1–4: The Beginning

  • What’s happening: Week 1 and 2 are counted as part of your pregnancy even before conception. Around week 3, fertilization occurs, and by week 4, the embryo implants into the uterine lining.
  • Your body: You might miss your period, feel light cramping, or notice breast tenderness.
  • Tip: Start taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid to help prevent neural tube defects.

Weeks 5–8: Major Organ Formation

  • Baby: The heart begins to beat (around week 6), and tiny limb buds appear. Facial features start forming.
  • You: Morning sickness, fatigue, and mood swings may become noticeable.
  • Tip: Eat small, frequent meals and stay hydrated to help manage nausea.

Weeks 9–13: The First Trimester Ends

Tip: Schedule your first prenatal scan to check on your baby’s growth and heartbeat.

Baby: All major organs are formed by week 12. Baby is about 7–8 cm long by week 13 and starts moving (though you won’t feel it yet).

You: You may notice changes in your skin, such as darkening around the nipples or a linea nigra on your belly.
